It may be practiced through a variety of artistic mediums, including literature, art, music, film, television, and even comic strips. Examples of social commentary can be found everywhere, from street art addressing local issues to news and television shows critiquing politicians, from literary and film works exploring political injustices to dystopian fiction examining societal control, from rap music discussing racial inequality to internet-based platforms promoting open discussions.
While analysis and criticism are often central to political commentary, it can also serve an advocacy role. Commentators use their platform to promote specific political parties, ideologies, or individual figures. In addition, satire and humor are often utilized as political commentary.
While the importance of political commentary has shifted throughout history, it continues to play a vital role in most democratic societies. In some countries, this function is largely carried out by media systems that feature strong political parallelism and more active journalistic roles, while in others it is more closely associated with market-oriented journalism and increased journalist independence.
